Who decides what the best self-help books are?

It’s an interesting concept, but who really decides what the best self-help books on the market are when there are literally thousands to choose from. In our experience those publishers with the biggest budgets are the ones that make the most noise – and while such books deliver sound advice and life experiences – many simply fail to reach the spot. It’s too late then because you have already paid your money.

Many of these books recommend regular exercises, affirmations, 21 day courses and much, much more and when you join them all together it sounds like one big obstacle course. If such things work for you then great – this is not the website for negative comments – but here at PPT we like to keep things simple.

Regular visitors will know that you tell the universe what you need by combining common sense and reality, you take a little action to move things along and then forget all about it. We know this works and talk about it in our blogs.

In our opinion the best self-help books also keep it simple. They realise that most of us do not want to commit to a daily grind of trying to visualise the goals when all they are doing is highlighting that they are not part of their lives – and that is what gets delivered - nothing.

So here at PPT is our recommendation on what we think at the best self-help books. Enjoy.

Get Your Sh*t Together

Ever find yourself snowed under at the office - or even just glued to the sofa - when you really want to get out (for once), get to the gym (at last), and get started on that daunting dream project you're always putting off? Then it's time to get your sh*t together.

In The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k, 'anti-guru' Sarah Knight introduced the joys of mental decluttering. Get Your Sh*t Together takes you one stop further - organizing the f*cks you want and needto give to help you quit your day job and move abroad, balance work and fun - and save money while you're at it - or simply get out of the door for happy hour, every day.

Psychologists believe that low self-esteem is at the root of many emotional problems. When you have healthy self-esteem, you feel good about yourself and see yourself as deserving of the respect of others. When you have low self-esteem, you put little value on your opinions and ideas, and may find yourself fading into the background of life. Without some measure of self-worth, you cannot accomplish your goals.

Change Your Thinking with CBT

All of us experience complicated thoughts and feelings as we negotiate the day and these feelings can be difficult to manage. Sometimes we are aware that the way we think contributes to our difficulties, but don't know what to do about it.

Change Your Thinking is soundly based on the principles of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), the standard psychological tool used by therapists. The aim of CBT is to develop realistic thought patterns to help us respond better to upsetting emotions.

In this fully revised and updated edition of her bestselling book Dr Edelman demonstrates how to dispute that nagging voice in your head and deal more rationally with feelings of anger, depression, frustration and anxiety. The book also offers sensible suggestions for more effective communication and for finding happiness - something that is within everyone's grasp.

Stop Thinking Start Living

Revolutionary in its simplicity and accessible to all, this bestselling book offers commonsense methods that allow you to let go of depression and tap into natural joy.

In this indispensable handbook, Richard Carlson demonstrates how we can change everything in our lives – earn more money, meet new friends, get a new job – yet still feel dissatisfied. Happiness, he says, is not 'out there' but within, a state of mind that is independent of circumstance: 'If you begin to see that your thoughts are not the real thing – they're just thoughts and as thoughts they can't hurt you – your entire life will begin to change today.'

7 Habits is a fantastic book and I would strongly recommend to anyone.
The classis ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ by Norman Vincent Peal is a good book. ‘How to winn friends and influence people’ is also a classic yet relevant book particularly for those who want to develop social capacity.
John Maxwell’s ‘How to win with people’ is good.
‘Confidence’ and ‘Positive Psychology’are also really helpful
