Look Really Closely

Sometimes the things we are looking for are already there. We simply aren't looking closely enough to see them. We become so focused on what is missing from our lives that we overlook what is present. We want a better job, more money, greater confidence or a different future, while failing to notice the opportunities, relationships and small successes that already surround us.

Look really closely. You might discover that the situation you thought was holding you back is actually teaching you something. The disappointment you experienced may have opened a door you hadn't noticed. The person you almost ignored might have something important to offer. Even a difficult day can contain a moment of kindness, laughter or unexpected possibility.

Positive thinking doesn't mean putting a smile on everything or pretending that difficulties don't exist. It means becoming more aware of what else is happening.

Our minds are remarkably good at finding evidence for whatever we choose to believe. If you expect everything to go wrong, you will notice every problem. If you start looking for possibility, you become more likely to recognise it when it appears.

That doesn't mean positive things magically appear simply because you think about them. It means your attention changes, and when your attention changes, your experience of life can change with it.

So today, slow down. Look beyond the obvious. Look again at the people around you. Look again at the opportunities you dismissed. Look again at yourself.

Sometimes a better life isn't waiting somewhere else. Sometimes it is already there, waiting for you to look closely enough to see it.
