Your Mind Can Build a Prison From Old Beliefs

We don't always realise how powerful our old beliefs can become. A thought we have repeated for years can begin to feel like a fact. I'm not good enough. I'm not capable. It's too late. People like me don't succeed. I shouldn't take the risk. Eventually, we stop questioning the thought and start living according to it. That is how a prison can be built without a single brick being laid.

The bars in the poster represent the beliefs, fears and experiences that can restrict the way we see ourselves. Past mistakes, criticism, rejection, comparison and disappointment can all become part of the story we tell ourselves. But there is something important about this particular prison. You still hold the key.

You don't have to erase your past. You don't have to pretend that difficult things never happened. You don't have to become somebody completely different. You can start by questioning the beliefs that have been deciding what you can and cannot do.

Is I'm not good enough actually a fact? Is I can't really true? Or is it an old conclusion you have carried for so long that you have forgotten to challenge it? Positive thinking begins there. Not with pretending everything is wonderful, but with becoming curious about your own thinking.

You are not broken. You may have learned to see yourself through a lens created by fear, disappointment or other people's opinions. But learned beliefs can be questioned. And when you question them, you create a choice. The door may have been closed for years. But the key has been in your hand all along.
