Believe in Yourself

How often do you look at yourself and see all the things you think are wrong? You are too old. You are not clever enough. You are not attractive enough. You made too many mistakes. Other people are more successful, more confident, more interesting or more capable than you. Somewhere along the way, you have collected all these little criticisms and allowed them to become a description of who you are., but here is the problem you might be wrong.

Self-esteem is not about convincing yourself that you are wonderful at everything. It is about recognising that you are probably far more capable than the version of yourself you have created in your own mind.

We are often much harder on ourselves than we would ever be on somebody else. If a friend made a mistake, we would probably tell them that everyone gets things wrong and that one failure does not define them. Yet when we make the same mistake, we can spend years using it as evidence that we are not good enough. Why?

Stop Measuring Yourself Against Everyone Else

One of the fastest ways to damage your self-esteem is to make somebody else's life the measuring stick for your own. There will always be someone who appears to be doing better than you. They may have more money, a better job, a happier relationship, a bigger house or a body you wish you had. Social media has made this comparison even harder because we are constantly presented with carefully selected versions of other people's lives, but you are not seeing the whole story.

You are comparing your ordinary day with somebody else's massive highlight event. That is not a fair competition. Your life has its own circumstances, disappointments, achievements and possibilities. The person you need to compete with is the person you were yesterday.

Your Mistakes Do Not Own You

Maybe you have made some terrible decisions. Most of us have. Maybe you stayed in the wrong relationship for too long, took the wrong job, trusted the wrong person or missed an opportunity that you still think about. None of that means you have to carry those decisions around as proof that you are incapable of making better ones.

A mistake is something that happened. It is not who you are. The important question is what you learned from it and what you do next.

Start Acting Like You Matter

Self-esteem does not grow because somebody tells you that you are fantastic. It grows when your behaviour starts giving you evidence that you can trust yourself.

Speak up when you would normally remain silent. Say no when you would normally agree. Try something you have been avoiding. Stop accepting treatment that makes you feel worthless. Take responsibility for your decisions and give yourself credit when you get something right.

Small acts of courage matter because every time you do something that the doubtful voice inside your head told you was impossible, you challenge the story you have been telling yourself. That is how change begins.

You do not need to become somebody else. You need to start recognising the value of the person you already are. So, look at this poster whenever you need the reminder.

Believe in yourself.

Not because you are perfect. Not because everything will work out, but because you are capable of learning, changing, recovering, trying again and becoming more than you currently believe is possible. The stronger version of you is not waiting somewhere in the future. It starts with the way you see yourself today.
