Living the Dream

What does living the dream actually mean? We often use the phrase as though there is one perfect version of life waiting for us somewhere in the future. The better job. The bigger house. More money. More freedom. The perfect relationship. The holiday we have always wanted. And because we are always looking towards that next thing, we can forget something rather important.Life is happening now.

You don't have to wait until everything is perfect before you allow yourself to enjoy your life. That doesn't mean giving up your ambitions. You can want more. You can have goals, work hard and dream about what might come next. But there is a difference between wanting a better future and believing that your present life has no value until you reach it.

You are not broken because your life isn't exactly where you want it to be. You may still be learning. You may be starting again. You may have taken a completely different route from the one you expected. None of that means you have failed.

Sometimes living the dream is something much smaller than we imagine. It is laughing with people you love. Waking up with a sense of possibility. Having the freedom to make your own choices. Discovering something new. Feeling grateful for an ordinary day that, when you stop to think about it, isn't ordinary at all.

Your dream doesn't have to look like somebody else's. Build a life that means something to you. Then stop waiting for tomorrow to start enjoying it.

Because maybe living the dream isn't about finally getting everything you wanted. Maybe it's recognising how much of the dream you are already living.
