You Don't Discover Your Potential By Thinking About What You Could Do

We spend a surprising amount of time thinking about what we could do. We imagine the possibilities. We make plans. We picture how things might turn out. We tell ourselves that one day, when we have more confidence, more experience or more time, we will finally give it a go. And then we wonder why nothing changes.

Potential isn't discovered through imagination alone. It is discovered through experience. You can think about running a marathon, starting a business, learning a new skill or doing something that scares you. But until you take that first step, you don't really know what you are capable of.

Trying changes everything. You might succeed. You might fail. You might discover that you aren't ready yet. You might discover that you are far more capable than you believed. All of those outcomes teach you something.

The problem is that fear often convinces us that we need certainty before we begin. We want to know that we will succeed before we are willing to try. But certainty rarely comes first.

Action creates evidence. Every time you attempt something difficult, you learn more about yourself. You discover strengths you didn't know you possessed. You find weaknesses you can work on. You learn what needs to change and what you are already capable of doing. And this is where positive thinking becomes practical.

Don't spend your life asking, “What could I do?” Ask a better question: “What could I discover if I tried?”

You are not broken. You don't need to become someone else before you begin. Take the first step. Your potential isn't waiting to be imagined. It is waiting to be discovered.
